Are you looking for a less expensive wedding photography option? I am a part-time photographer still learning the trade with one season shooting weddings for pay under my belt. Because I am building my portfolio and my expenses are less than a pro with a full studio, I can charge less. True, I don’t offer all of the services they do and I don’t have a degree from a photography school, but I give you what you need to make beautiful prints and albums yourself: great digital originals.
In 2006 when my wife and I were married in Ithaca we found it surprisingly hard to find a photographer that met our needs and budget. We didn’t want, nor could afford, the typical photo studio that offered numerous expensive packages including custom printing, albums, multiple photographers, etc. Most of these charged per print ordered. What we wanted was a single, capable photographer with a good digital SLR camera and lenses who would capture great images and give us all the digital files. We knew how to take care of the printing ourselves, thank you very much. I was surprised to find out that pros don’t even give their clients the copyright to their images. In other words, they remain the property of the photographer, not the couple who pay for them!
The wedding and event photo service I offer to clients is exactly what I was looking for in 2006. I take great digital images of your event, do minimal processing of images (only basic technical corrections) and give you all the keepers as full-size jpegs files on one or more DVDs within 48 hours (along with the copyright). They are yours to print as you like on your home printer or through one of the many convenient printing services (Walmart, Shutterfly, Apple iPhoto, etc.) I also offer at no extra cost upload of the best of your photos to a private gallery on my Flickr Pro site. Here they are visible and downloadable to anyone you give access, but not visible to the general public.
I know how to be at the right place at the right time to capture images you’ll return to again and again. I have one of the newest Nikon digital SLRs that takes big 12.3 megapixel images, several Nikon lenses and their best flash, and I use Apple’s Aperture software and Photoshop CS3. For weddings I charge a flat rate of $550 for a full day of shooting, basic editing, and the photo DVD of hundreds of images. These will include whatever arranged shots you’d like of the wedding party and family members, any portrait-style photos you’d like, and as many photojournalist-style impromtu shots as I can click off. Fees for other events will vary according to the length of the job.
